History of The Toggery

In 1914, H.H. Van Brocklin opened The Toggery, saying that it would sell "the very best dependable men's goods on the market." For 90 years, The Toggery has never wavered from that promise. The Toggery's first location was in the Times Clothing Mart at 114 West Front Street. After a few years in this location, the owner built a brick building on a vacant lot next door at 112 West Front Street. In 1953, Owl Drug Store to the east became available, and The Toggery enlarged. These two locations are now Brown's. In 1965, The Toggery moved to its present location.

In its long history, The Toggery has only had five owners. In 1930, Mr. Van Brocklin sold the store to Sam Levinson. Lee Silverman owned The Toggery from 1945 to 1970. In 1970, Jack Montgomery and Bud Rinehart purchased the store. Jack and Bud are remembered by long-time Port Angeles residents for their enthusiasm, personal service, and commitment to the community. Bud retired in 1982, and Jack sold the store in 1986 to Roy and Mary Gotham, the current owners.

For years The Toggery sold men's work clothes, shoes, and boy's clothing. Many boys purchased their Scout uniforms from The Toggery, and generations of high school athletes have purchased their Athletes jackets from The Toggery. Ladies' clothing was not introduced until the late 1970's.
